When is a pig not a pig? Answer: when she is a Jersey calf! Pig, age 6 weeks, greets folks as they enter the farm with a gleeful “moo”, a hop-skip-and-a-jump, and looks mournfully if you pass her by without giving a little scratch on the chin. Pig is a student project–those projects developed in concert with the farm manager to connect a student’s interest with a meaningful learning experience that might not otherwise be available through the animal units currently on the farm. Other student projects include raising pigs(real pigs) and chickens on pasture, construction of an earthen bread oven, and the development of a medicinal plant garden for treating animal ailments.
